The Church Commissioners own the freehold, but the day-to-day belongs to the Palace Trust — an independent charity that takes no statutory funding — which runs the moated medieval palace and its fourteen acres of RHS partner gardens beside Wells Cathedral. The 2026 season runs from late March to late October, half past nine to half past five with winter hours behind it; a £15 day ticket converts to an annual pass for little more, and RHS members walk the gardens free on Fridays all year. The wells that name the city rise in the grounds.
