The Cockleshell opened on Saltash's Fore Street in the summer of 2020, built around the classic micropub format: no television, no fruit machines, and a request that phones stay in pockets. Three rotating beers are kept at any time, drawn from small breweries such as TQ Beerworks and Treen's rather than a fixed house list, alongside real cider. The format was researched at the Drapers Arms in Bristol, where the owner pulled pints and studied the trade before bringing the idea back to south-east Cornwall. Seating is close and conversational, built for a dozen or so regulars rather than passing footfall. It keeps to evening hours Tuesday to Sunday, staying shut on Mondays. The absence of screens keeps the room's attention on the bar and the beer list chalked above it.
