The Golden Ball in Bishophill became York's first community co-operative pub in 2012, when 189 local people bought shares to save it, and it is now owned and run by them rather than any brewery or pub company. It is also a piece of history: Grade II listed, its 1929 John Smith's remodelling almost completely intact, described by CAMRA as the most complete surviving inter-war scheme of its kind. A proper street-corner local, owned by its street. Drink a pint that keeps a listed pub in its community's hands.
