The Honey Tree has traded as an independent wholefood shop on Heaton Road since 1999, when it was set up to bring organic and local produce back onto the street. Fresh vegetables arrive weekly and bread is delivered daily, alongside a full range of dried goods, spices and household staples sold loose through a refill counter to cut down on packaging. The shop also runs a local veg box scheme for households across Heaton and Sandyford. Now in its third decade on the same Heaton Road premises, the business has never expanded to a second shop, setting it apart from the organic supermarket chains operating in central Newcastle. Staff know regular customers by name, a holdover from the shop's founding as a community-minded alternative to the era's larger grocers.
