Weavers traces its origins to 1844, when Edward Cossal Weaver opened a public house on the site now occupied by the shop at Castle Gate. George Trease bought the business in 1897, and his descendants converted it from a pub into a wine and spirits merchant during the 1960s. Siblings Philip and Mary now run the fifth generation of family ownership, supplying private customers, corporate accounts and a number of the city's restaurants. The range spans everyday drinking bottles through to rarer, harder-to-find wines and spirits, with a particularly strong South American selection. Staff are encouraged to work towards Wine and Spirit Education Trust qualifications and run informal tasting sessions for customers wanting to learn more before they buy. The shop has traded from the same Castle Gate address since it first opened in 1844.
