Cantina is a café, bakery and kitchen at 20 High Street in Ventnor, opened in 2013 by chef Klaus Kuhnke, who also runs Artisan Foods and a German deli stall at Borough Market in London. Kuhnke used local tradespeople for the fit-out of the 22-seat premises, which serves food from 7.30am to 10pm every day of the year. The kitchen bakes its own sourdough, quiches and pastries on site each morning and runs a menu built around British ingredients with Continental influences, served for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coffee comes from Square Mile. With only 22 covers, the café fills quickly at peak times and takes reservations even for breakfast. The bakery side operates independently of the sit-down menu, so customers can buy bread and pastries to take away as well as eat in. Cantina has built a reputation as one of Ventnor's steadier year-round places to eat, open through the winter months when many seasonal Island businesses close.
