Crafty Monkey Brewing was set up in 2017 by Pat Garrett and Gary Olvanhill, two friends who had worked together on Teesside for three decades before taking redundancy from the oil industry. They converted farm outbuildings on the edge of Elwick, just outside Hartlepool, into a five-barrel brewing plant, having spent years experimenting with all-grain home brews before going professional. The brewery produces a core range including a lager, a blonde ale, a stout and a ruby ale, sold in cask to pubs across Teesside and in bottles and cans through its own online shop and other stockists. Rather than running a permanent taproom, Crafty Monkey appears at pop-up bars and brewery takeover nights in local pubs, and has supplied beer for events including the Tall Ships Races in Hartlepool. The business has been covered repeatedly in the local press for seasonal and novelty beers tied to local events and anniversaries. It remains independently owned and operates from its original Hartlepool-registered site.
