Darke Cycles is an independent bike shop trading in Sunderland since September 1982, when it opened in Fulwell during the BMX boom before relocating several times as the town centre redeveloped. It has occupied 1 John Street in Sunderland city centre for more than a decade. The shop sells bikes from brands including Raleigh, GT, Cannondale and Mongoose, alongside BMX and children's bikes, and runs its own workshop offering repairs, custom wheel building and servicing for bikes of any make, not only those bought in-store. It participates in the Cycle to Work scheme and accepts Halfords vouchers, without being owned by or tied to a larger retail chain. Known locally as Peter Darke Cycles after its founder, the business has stayed under the same family's ownership since it opened over four decades ago, remaining one of Sunderland's few independent bike shops offering both retail sales and in-house repairs from a single city-centre site.
