Indie Füde began as Johnny McDowell and Laura Bradley's online showcase for small Irish food producers, and became a shop when they opened this deli on Castle Street in Comber. It is a champion's shop: shelves given over to the best small-batch makers on the island — cheese, charcuterie, preserves, baked goods — chosen and sold with an evangelist's care. McDowell was appointed MBE for services to Northern Ireland's food and drink, which tells you how seriously the trade takes what they do. A second shop has since opened in Belfast, but Comber is the original. The kind of deli that keeps a hundred small producers in business by giving them a shelf.
