There has been a bakery in the premises at 240 Gloucester Road since the 1800s; Martin and Jane Hunt bought the business in 1990 and, in the way good successions should run, handed it over in February 2026 to Wayne Thick — who joined at sixteen in 1997 — and Jenny Rogers, who started as a Saturday assistant in 2006; both had been shareholders for a decade before their names went on the door. Britain's Best Loaf has gone to these ovens twice, for innovation in 2018 and the white City Loaf in 2019, and a second shop, the Breadstore, has traded along the same road since 2018.
