Karachi Restaurant opened on Neal Street in 1958 as the Karachi Social Club, and is generally counted as the second-oldest curry house still trading in Bradford after the nearby Kashmir. Mumrez Khan has run the kitchen for close to fifty years, keeping the format plain: a short menu and dishes served with a choice of chapatti, naan or rice included in the price. The dish most associated with the restaurant combines lamb, spinach and green chillies, cooked to the recipe that the television chef Rick Stein filmed in the kitchen during a visit in 2002. Portions are generous and prices remain low compared with newer restaurants nearby. Payment is mostly in cash. The dining room draws a mix of long-standing regulars and visitors who have read about its history rather than found it by chance.
