Phil Garvey, a former solicitor, opened the Cap and Collar in a disused sweet shop on Queens Road in November 2014, making it West Yorkshire's first micropub. The name plays on legal shorthand, cap for the poorest client and collar for the wealthiest, and the open, cafe-style room seats around thirty-five with a rear beer garden for overflow. Three cask ales rotate alongside up to four keg beers from independent breweries and a rack of bottled options, with dogs welcome when the room isn't too full. A first-Tuesday book club and a homebrew club on the second Wednesday keep a core of regulars coming back outside normal drinking hours. There is no jukebox, television or fruit machine, in keeping with the pared-back micropub format Garvey wanted. Queues formed down Queens Road before the first pint was even pulled.
