There has been a butcher on Melrose's Market Square for more than a hundred and fifty years, latterly as Martin Baird's; Neil and Suzanne took it on in 2024 and renamed it MacVicars after Neil's twenty years managing the counter — the manager-to-owner succession that keeps a shop's knife-work continuous when the name over the door changes. The trade is the full Borders butchery: haggis, black and white pudding made in-house, pies and savouries baked daily behind the counter, meat off the surrounding farms. Melrose does abbey ruins and rugby sevens for the visitors; the town's own weekly shop runs through here.
