Newlands Cafe has traded from 262 Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands since 1973, when Giambattista and Gemma Coia, who had arrived from Filignano in the Isernia province of Italy, took over the previous Fusco-owned premises. The cafe still makes its ice cream on site, following recipes carried from that first generation, alongside all-day breakfasts, toasties and milkshakes served at tables under the original signage. Three generations of the Coia family have run the counter since, making it one of the longer-standing Italian cafes on Glasgow's southside. It remains a single shop rather than part of a wider group, and the ice cream counter is what continues to draw custom from across the neighbourhood.
