Sophie Latinis moved from Zimbabwe to the East Neuk fishing village of Pittenweem and opened her chocolate business on the High Street on the 13th of July 2007 — handmade chocolates, a range that leans into Scotland with single-malt whisky liqueurs among the fillings, and the Cocoa Tree café attached for those who want theirs melted into a cup. The business has grown enough to win planning consent for a dedicated production base, the sign of an artisan operation outgrowing its back room in the best way, and still trades daily from the High Street shop. A harbour village of a few hundred people supporting a proper chocolatier is the East Neuk economy at its most improbable and most likeable, and the whisky truffles are the argument clincher.
