The Prairie Schooner Taphouse opened on Flixton Road in Urmston in 2014, run by R J MacRae as a craft beer bar and off-licence rather than a conventional pub. Four hand-pulled cask ales rotate alongside eight craft keg lines and more than 150 bottled and canned beers kept refrigerated, with ciders, whiskies, wines and small-batch spirits sourced mostly from North West producers. There is deliberately no music system or sports television, and the pub instead runs a Monday music quiz and a Tuesday pen-and-paper quiz alongside occasional live music and brewery takeover nights. A small snug room seats group bookings of six to ten, and a portable ramp allows wheelchair access to the main bar. It has twice been named LocAle branch pub of the year.
