Rooney Fish has processed shellfish from Kilkeel Harbour since 1975, when the Rooney family began landing and selling fish from the Irish Sea. Now run by second-generation Andrew Rooney alongside his parents John Andrew and Rosemary, the business handles langoustines, brown crab, lobster, whelks and scampi from the local fleet, and has grown into a 6,000 square metre processing plant on the harbourside site. In 2014 Rooney Fish opened its own oyster farm on the north shore of Carlingford Lough, and its Millbay oysters have since been named among Ireland's best food. The company marked its fiftieth anniversary in 2025 as one of Northern Ireland's leading seafood exporters, shipping to markets across Europe and Asia, with all processing and sales handled from the single Kilkeel site.
