Basil and Frances Krish bought a secondhand bookshop at the end of Sevenoaks High Street in 1948 and gave it the town's name; the ownership chain since — Winifred Scott from 1985, Valerie Glencross and Sarah Webb-Wilson from 2000, Fleur Sinclair since 2015 — reads like a relay of careful hands, and Sinclair now also serves as President of the Booksellers Association, which makes this shop the trade's home address in more ways than one. The British Book Awards named it the country's best independent in 2021; an expansion into the next-door unit in 2020 added room for the children's shop, and ten booksellers work the floors. Seventy-eight years of one shop, four owners, no chain — the arithmetic of survival done right.
