Yoka Kilkelly, who first handled clay at the age of six in her native Netherlands, teaches pottery from her studio at Lanclynadda, a working farm outside Alltwalis. She and her husband Bryan converted a barn into a light, six-wheel studio set among open hill country north-west of Carmarthen. Kilkelly throws and hand-decorates white earthenware into domestic tableware, and teaches half-day, full-day and residential weekend courses on the potter's wheel to students who travel from across the UK. Weekend courses include bed and breakfast accommodation on site, in rooms built into the same converted farm buildings as the studio. Class sizes stay small enough for Kilkelly to give one-to-one attention at each wheel, and she still throws her own stock for sale between teaching sessions.
