The Stein Inn has overlooked Lochbay in the crofting township of Waternish since 1790, making it the oldest inn on Skye. Charlie, who moved from London after visiting on her way to wild camp in the Outer Hebrides, now owns and runs the inn herself, working front of house and in the kitchen. The bar keeps over 120 Scottish whiskies alongside Skye and Scottish beers and gins, poured in low-ceilinged rooms warmed by log burners. Shellfish comes daily from the loch opposite, including langoustines, lobster, crab and mussels, served alongside the whisky trade. The inn operates as a free house rather than a tied pub, giving Charlie a free hand over what goes behind the bar.
