Carmina Gadelica has traded from Armadale House on Bank Street in Portree since 1993, taking its name from Alexander Carmichael's collection of Gaelic prayers, charms and folklore. Staff speak Gaelic and the shelves lean toward Hebridean history, poetry, folklore and mythology alongside general stock and maps for walkers. The shop is a member of the Booksellers Association and also stocks fly and sea fishing tackle, a pairing that dates back to its earliest years and still surprises first-time visitors browsing for a book. It remains one of the few dedicated bookshops on Skye, serving both the island's Gaelic-speaking community and the readers who pass through Portree on their way north or south on the island's single main road.
