Portree High School teachers Angus MacRuary and Stephen Tinney brewed their first batch at the pier in Uig in 1995, naming it Red Cuillin after the island's mountains; the recipe is still brewed today as Skye Red. Tinney sold his share to MacRuary in 1996, and MacRuary left teaching to run the brewery full-time after it won the CAMRA Champion Beer of Scotland award in 1997. Kenny Webster bought the business in 2013 and later added Black Wolf Brewery's bottling plant in Stirling to expand production, while brewing itself stays on the original Uig site. A brewery shop at the pier sells the beer directly to visitors, on the same site where the original ten-barrel plant was upgraded to twenty barrels in 2004.
