The Macdonald family has lived at Viewfield, on the edge of Portree, since the early nineteenth century; Harry Macdonald took the lease in 1846 and founded the law firm Macdonald and Fraser in the town. His son extended the Georgian house in the 1880s to a design by architect Alexander Ross, whose additions the family still describe as prone to leaking and expensive to maintain. Col. Jock and Evelyn Macdonald opened Viewfield for bed and breakfast in 1954 after returning from India, and the house remains in family hands, now run by Iona and her husband Jasper. It has eleven bedrooms in the main house plus two more in the old stables, set in twenty acres of woodland garden a short walk from the centre of Portree.
