The Curran family has run The Alfred Free House on Bishops Road in Upper Hale since 2008, in a corner building dating from 1856. As a free house rather than a pub tied to one brewery, The Alfred sources its cask ales entirely from independent breweries, rotating the selection regularly, a policy that helped it win Surrey and Hants Borders CAMRA's Pub of the Year in 2020. Regulars describe it as a friendly community pub with a chatty, relaxed atmosphere, welcoming both long-standing customers and newcomers to Upper Hale. Children under eight are not admitted. Opening hours are Tuesday 5pm to 9pm, Wednesday and Thursday 5pm to 10pm, Friday 5pm to 11pm, Saturday 5pm to 9pm and Sunday 2pm to 8pm; the pub is closed on Mondays.
