The FILO began brewing in its back room in 1985 — Hastings' first brewpub — and has been in the hands of the same family since 1988, long enough that the pub and the surname are used interchangeably in the Old Town. The brewery outgrew the back room and moved in 2011 to a Grade II listed stable at Torfield Cottage up Old London Road, disclosed here as the operation's second building, but the beer still flows shortest-path to the High Street bar: Crofters the bitter, Cardinal the Sussex porter, FILO Gold the one with the medals. Open noon to nearly midnight, seven days, under a name that is a licensing joke old enough to vote.
