Judges has baked on Hastings High Street since 1826, which makes 2026 its two hundredth year — one of the oldest working bakeries in Britain, still opening at a quarter to eight. Its modern chapters are told plainly: Josephine Fairley and Craig Sams, the Green & Black's founders, owned and modernised it after moving to Hastings in 2002, and Michael Wooton owns it today, having bought it — in his own telling — to share the bread he loved. A second counter trades in Tenterden, disclosed here. The food-safety inspectors were through in January 2026 and found it good; two centuries of practice, as Penrith also teaches, will do that.
