The building took in guests before it was ever an inn: its earliest fabric is late fifteenth century, raised as a guest house for the Abbots of Cleeve, an inn by 1651, and Grade II* listed since 1969. Nigel and Anne Way bought it out of administration in 2012 and spent the following decade on the restoration; they run it with their daughter Becca, alongside their Porlock Weir Hotel — a two-house family affair on the Exmoor coast. Twenty-eight bedrooms, a restaurant with rosette recognition, and gardens running up against Dunster Castle's parkland. The castle belongs to the Trust; the inn, pointedly, does not.
