Theatr Hafren opened in 1983 on Llanidloes Road and is Powys' largest live venue, with 556 seats making it the main indoor stage for Newtown and mid Wales. Programming runs from touring drama, comedy and dance to brass bands, orchestras and matinee film screenings, with a 2011 refurbishment adding a new fly tower. It is run on behalf of Powys County Council rather than as a commercial chain venue.
