A 16th century castle on the Lauderdale Estate at Lauder in the Scottish Borders, historic seat of the Duke of Lauderdale and home to the Maitland family for over 400 years. The central part was completed in 1590, remodelled in the 1670s and enlarged in the 1840s. Guided tours cover the plasterwork ceilings and family portrait collection; castle suites and estate woodland lodges are let year round. Operated by The Thirlestane Castle Trust, a registered charity.
