Vaux Brewery operates a working microbrewery and taproom from Unit 4 on Charles Street in Monkwearmouth, close to St Peter's Metro station. The business was founded in 2019 by Sunderland friends Steven Smith and Michael Thompson, together with Matthew Jackson and Ross Palmer, who revived the name of the city's historic Vaux Breweries, founded by Cuthbert Vaux in 1806 and closed in 1999 with the loss of around 700 jobs. The current brewery has no ownership connection to the original company but brews under the resurrected name, producing cask and keg beer including a revived Double Maxim, sold to pubs and independent bottle shops across the North East as well as from the on-site taproom. It operates as a single independent site, separate from national brewing groups. Taproom opening hours vary, including weekend and Sunderland AFC match-day sessions, so visitors should check the brewery's website or social media before travelling.
