A pub has stood on this corner of Argyle Street since 1884, first run by publican George Praugnell and traded under a string of other names before settling on the Ben Nevis. It shut for a long stretch before reopening after a refurbishment in 1999, and has traded since as a free house, with around 300 whiskies behind the bar rather than the range of a single tied brewery. Traditional Scottish and Irish music sessions run through the week, drawing a mix of regulars, students and visitors working through the whisky list one dram at a time. The bar sits on the Finnieston stretch of Argyle Street, among the area's newer restaurants, though its dark wood interior and long gantry have stayed largely unchanged through the refit. It remains independently run, with no branch elsewhere in the city.
