Yuriy Kachak opened Deanston Bakery on Deanston Drive in Shawlands in 2019, after training as a chef and working in London for about fifteen years. He runs the shop with his wife and his mother and brother, baking sourdough loaves, bagels, cinnamon buns and filled sandwiches from a single kitchen each morning. The menu carries traces of Kachak's Ukrainian background: honey cake and caraway rye sit alongside plain white sourdough, filled bagels and toasties for the daily trade. Ingredients are sourced from Scottish suppliers where practical, and the shop operates from one shopfront with no other branches. In spring 2022, Kachak organised bake sales that raised more than £100,000 for the Disaster Emergency Committee's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, drawing coverage from STV News and a later visit from the Scottish FA. The bakery opens early six days a week and closes on Sunday, with shorter hours on Monday. Queues for sourdough and pastries are common on Saturday mornings.
