The Donmar Warehouse occupies a former hop and banana warehouse off Seven Dials, converted into a rehearsal space in the early 1960s and first opened to audiences as a theatre in 1977. It became a fully independent, not-for-profit producing house in 1992 under Sam Mendes, and its 251 seats, arranged close around a thrust stage, have since made it one of London's more sought-after tickets despite holding no West End frontage. The building's exposed brick and ironwork are largely original, giving productions an intimacy that larger houses cannot replicate. It operates as a registered charity rather than a commercial venue, reliant on ticket sales, transfers and philanthropic support rather than a wider network of sister theatres.
