Fairbourne Railway

Gwynedd & Eryri · WAL

SH 6154 1284Fairbourne · Gwynedd & EryriSurveyed

The line began in 1895 as the horse tramway that built Fairbourne itself, and opened to passengers in 1916 as a fifteen-inch-gauge steam railway. It closed in 1940, was rescued and reopened in 1946 by a consortium of Midlands businessmen, and was rebuilt to its present twelve-and-a-quarter-inch gauge in 1986, when the half-size locomotives Yeo, Sherpa, Beddgelert and Russell were introduced. After spells in private hands it passed to a charitable trust in 2009. The line runs from the village to the mouth of the Mawddach, where the foot ferry crosses to Barmouth, and it is one of the Great Little Trains of Wales.
