Far From The Madding Crowd occupies a Georgian building on Linlithgow High Street, run by Sally Pattle, who grew up in the town and took over after her mother had run an earlier version of the shop. The current premises date from 2012, when two separate local bookshops were combined into one address across two floors. Stock leans towards a dedicated Scottish authors section alongside general fiction, cookery, travel and children's titles, plus stationery and Seasalt homeware. The shop was named Scottish Independent Bookshop of the Year in 2017 and hosts two literary festivals annually, along with free Saturday storytelling sessions for children. It remains a single-site, family-run business rather than part of any bookshop group, with ordering handled from the shop floor rather than a central office.
