Fronteer Gallery occupies a unit in Orchard Square in Sheffield city centre, run by artists Michael and Sharon Borkowsky, who have organised exhibitions and open-call shows together since 2014. The gallery gives space to artists at every stage of their career, including first-time exhibitors, and pairs each show with mentorship and press support rather than simply hanging work and walking away. Exhibitions rotate regularly, with the gallery open to visitors on Tuesday to Thursday mornings and Saturday afternoons during shows. Fronteer also runs an annual open-call art prize intended to raise the profile of Sheffield-based artists beyond the city. It sits apart from the municipal galleries and the larger commercial spaces, functioning as a working artist-run project rather than a static exhibition hall, and it has become a fixture of the smaller gallery trail through the city centre.
