The Kelham Island Tavern reopened as a free house in 2002 inside a building put up in the 1830s, previously known as the Sawmaker and later the White Hart. Two small rooms, a carved wooden bar and a leafy beer garden sit behind an unassuming corner frontage on Russell Street. Thirteen handpumps rotate constantly, always including a porter and a stout, with regulars from Blue Bee, Abbeydale and Bradfield alongside guest ales from further afield. Food stops at cheese and onion baps and pork pies, keeping the focus squarely on the beer. It became the only pub to win the Campaign for Real Ale's National Pub of the Year title two years running, in 2008 and 2009, and has picked up Sheffield and Yorkshire branch awards most years since. A quiz runs on Mondays and folk musicians play on fourth Sundays.
