Northampton Filmhouse opened its first screen in June 2013 as a project of the Northampton Theatres Trust, the charity that also runs the Royal & Derngate next door, adding a second screen in April 2017. The seats are leather, sourced from Norway, with side tables rather than cup holders, and both bars serve drinks in glassware and proper crockery instead of plastic cups. Programming runs from first-run and independent film to parent-and-baby screenings and afternoon showings aimed at older audiences, with an outdoor terrace between the two screens for an interval drink. All profits are reinvested into the trust's wider arts programme across the county rather than paid out to shareholders. The building sits on Guildhall Road, close to the Guildhall and the county's cultural quarter, in what was previously commercial space attached to the theatre complex.
