Ameeta and Nathan Retzer started Quarter Horse Coffee in 2012 and began roasting in Birmingham three years later, building what they call the city's first specialty coffee roaster. In January 2023 the operation moved into an expanded site on Kenyon Street in the Jewellery Quarter, adding a training room, a small espresso bar and roasting capacity four times the size of their original cafe. Beans are roasted on a Giesen machine for espresso and a fully electric Stronghold roaster for filter coffee, with some power drawn from solar panels. The shop doubles as a wholesale supply base for cafes and restaurants across the region. It closes on weekends, reflecting its focus on production and training over passing trade. Packaging is fully recyclable or compostable, and deliveries run on an electric van.
