Showroom Cinema opened its first two screens on 27 March 1995 inside a 1936 Art Deco building that began life as the Kennings car showroom, rescued from years of disuse by the registered charity Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre. Two further screens seating 178 and 240 followed in 1998. The cinema relies on grants and donations for over half its income and is part-funded by the British Film Institute. It hosts Sheffield DocFest, the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival and Celluloid Screams, and runs one of only seven BFI Film Academies in the country for young filmmakers. A cafe bar looks over Tudor Square, with regular Q&As bringing directors and audiences together after screenings. Alongside the cinema sits Workstation, a sister building of creative offices, making the site a hub for the city's independent film culture.
