Gary and Margaret Marshall have kept the pub on Cornwall's only village green for some three decades, and CAMRA named it National Pub of the Year in 2000. Since then Gary has put more than four thousand different real ales over the bar — five or six at a time, always with a dark one among them — and the local branch calls the place a permanent mini beer festival. The ceilings hang with toby jugs, mugs and pump clips, there are barometers on every wall, a deliberate absence of wi-fi, and real cider from Haywoods Farm. A CAMRA Special Award followed in 2023 for appearing in more than forty editions of the Good Beer Guide. On the edge of Bodmin Moor, an easy detour off the Camel Trail.
