The Famous Star Hotel has stood on Moffat High Street since the late eighteenth century and holds the Guinness World Record for the narrowest detached hotel, measuring twenty feet across and 162 feet from front to back. The Leighfield family has run the hotel since 1985, offering eight ensuite bedrooms behind the narrow street frontage. Ally's Restaurant serves home-cooked meals alongside two separate bars, one aimed at residents and passing trade, pouring a range of Scottish beers and whiskies. Free parking on the High Street is available at all times, a point the hotel makes given Moffat's otherwise limited town-centre parking. The building's narrow proportions come from its construction along one of the burgage plots typical of the town's historic High Street layout.
