The Workshop is a jewellery workshop and shop at 164 High Street in Lewes, run by goldsmith Jonathan Swan since 1981, when he set up on the high street as a student alongside silversmith Simon Beer. The premises occupies one of a pair of 18th-century timber-framed shops, with a working bench and tools on display in the basement workshop beneath the retail floor. Swan designs and makes rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets to commission in silver and gold, and also sells ready-made pieces and gift vouchers. Past work has included a run of silver seashell jewellery shown at national trade fairs, though ill health from the associated chemical processes led him back to bespoke commission work. Customers can discuss designs for engagements, weddings, anniversaries or one-off gifts in person at the shop. Open Monday to Saturday, 9:30am to 5pm, closed Sundays and bank holidays, the workshop has occupied the same historic building for more than four decades.
