Chalk is an artist-run cooperative gallery in Lewes, established in 2005 by a group of local painters, printmakers and ceramicists who wanted a space to sell their own work without a dealer's mark-up. Sixteen member artists now share the running of the gallery on a rota, hanging paintings, prints and small ceramic pieces alongside changing guest exhibitions that turn over roughly every eight weeks. Subjects lean towards the Sussex landscape and the Downs, worked in oil, watercolour and mixed media, with a framing service run from the same premises. The gallery moved to new premises on Station Street in 2026 after years on North Street, and the co-op is currently recruiting three-dimensional artists to fill space left by an expanded two-dimensional hang. It opens Tuesday to Sunday and takes part in the town's Artists Open Houses trail each spring.
