Wells Film Centre began in January 1993 when independent operator Derek Cooper converted a former boys' club into a single-screen cinema seating 150, intending it as a stopgap while he negotiated to restore the town's derelict Regal Cinema. Those talks came to nothing, and the Film Centre became the only cinema in Wells. A second screen was added in 1999 and a third followed shortly after, bringing capacity to 311 seats across the three screens. It remains independently run, showing a mixed programme of new releases and family titles, with regular tea matinees and autism-friendly screenings. The box office opens daily from 1pm to 9pm, with tickets also bookable online up to an hour before a screening or by telephone during box office hours. All three screens are licensed for alcohol.
