Akara Bakery

Lewa began baking celebration cakes from home in 2016 under a different business name before settling on Akara and opening a shop at 537 Duke Street in December 2019. Red velvet was the first cake on the counter and remains the bestseller, alongside wedding cakes, baked cheesecakes and a rotating list of savoury bakes. The shop also runs a catering menu and stocks vegan and gluten-free options. Akara trades Thursday to Sunday, a shorter week than most Dennistoun food businesses, reflecting how much of the operation is still built around made-to-order celebration cake orders rather than counter trade alone. The Duke Street shopfront gives regulars a place to buy a slice of whatever is on the counter that day without booking a full cake in advance.
