BayArt occupies a former studio building on Bute Street that artists have used since the 1970s, first under the Association of Artists and Designers in Wales and, since 1997, under the resident group Butetown Artists. The public gallery opened in 2002 and is now directed by Liam O'Connor, showing exhibitions by emerging and mid-career artists from Wales and beyond. Upstairs, Butetown Artists and BayArt Associates keep working studios, and the building includes a residency space for visiting practitioners. The gallery opens Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, or by appointment between shows, and admission is free. Cardiff City Council transferred ownership of the building to the artists on condition it remain a public arts facility, an unusual case of a studio building staying in artists' hands rather than being redeveloped.
