The Open Boat, known locally by the name of its craft, Daffodil, departs from the Lower Boardwalk at Mermaid Quay for short, open-air circuits of Cardiff's Inner Harbour. Trips last around twenty minutes and carry up to eleven passengers, with the same skipper having run the service for more than two decades, pointing out landmarks, wildlife and points of local history along the way. No booking is taken; passengers pay on board, and blankets are handed out on colder days since the boat has no cabin. Sailings run through the year, conditions permitting, and fares are only a few pounds. Among the more elaborate cruise operators working out of the bay, it remains one of the few genuinely open boats, giving an unfiltered view of the harbour rather than a covered tour experience.
