Ebor Jetworks is a family workshop on Church Street, on Whitby's historic east side, where jewellery is cut and polished from locally gathered Whitby jet inside a seventeenth-century building. The maker behind it, Sarah Caldwell Steele, is a qualified geologist and accredited gemmologist who has researched the fossilised wood academically, and three generations of the family now work at the bench here. Jet has been carved in the town for centuries, and the workshop keeps the craft as a small cottage trade rather than a factory line. Visitors can watch a free jet-working demonstration through the day, seeing rough stone shaped into pendants, beads and mourning-style pieces. Everything is made on site from stone collected along the local shore, and the shop sells finished work alongside the demonstrations.
