Built in 1883 on Union Street, Mackays Hotel has been owned by the Lamont family since 1955, when Murray Lamont's grandmother acquired it; Murray and his wife Ellie have run it since the early 1980s. Its bistro entrance opens onto Ebenezer Place, recognised by Guinness World Records as the shortest street in the world. The hotel holds 30 en-suite rooms alongside a whisky bar, breakfast room and function space for up to 160 guests, plus self-catering townhouses and serviced apartments nearby. Sitting beside the River Wick on the NC500 route, it serves both tourists passing through and locals holding weddings and functions. The Lamonts put the hotel up for sale in 2022 after nearly seven decades of family ownership, with the listing still active in 2025, though it continues trading under their day-to-day management.
